How Big Should Your Driveway Be? Sizing Considerations for Your Home

How Big Should Your Driveway Be? Sizing Considerations for Your Home

When looking to buy a new house, you might not think that your driveway and the type of driveway pavers are important. However, you can get a decent idea of the house’s value depending on how the driveway looks.

And it’s not just when you’re looking to buy or sell. How a driveway looks can tell someone how the house is taken care of inside, despite how the rest of the exterior looks.

When it comes to installing driveway pavers in San Diego and the rest of Southern California, there are a few things to consider. Here are some of the more important aspects to keep in mind.

How Long and Wide Should a Driveway Be?

When a new home is built, it’s standard practice to have a driveway that is, at a minimum, eighteen to twenty feet long. Those of us who regularly drive pickups know that this is pretty short. In these cases, a driveway that is at least twenty-two feet long is your best bet.

If you’re looking to park more than one car on that driveway, plan for somewhere between ten to twelve feet per car. If you want to walk in between those cars, add an extra two to three feet if you have the space for it.

As we mentioned, though, these are just the minimum standard. You should always consider what other factors may go into the measurements before picking your driveway pavers. Remember that the adage of “measure twice, cut once” doesn’t just apply to cutting wood.

Other Important Factors for Your Driveway

Now that you know the standard size, here are a few other considerations to keep in mind when starting this particular project:

City Ordinances

As with any project relating to the exterior of your home, it always helps to double-check the city codes, laws, and ordinances. While there are a few similarities, there might be differences between the city code in El Cajon when compared with Escondido.

If you live in a neighborhood with a Home Owners Association, there might be rules on what you can or can’t do with your driveway. Always be sure of what your HOA requires on top of city and state laws and regulations.

How Many Vehicles are Owned

This is a factor that is sometimes overlooked when choosing to redo a driveway. Most homes will have a big enough driveway to park two vehicles. However,  your driveway will need to be longer or wider if you have more.

If you happen to host people at your home regularly, you might need driveway pavers that can be used to expand the project easily and handle multiple vehicles simultaneously. After all, they will need a place to park at your home as well.

And as we mentioned above, you would need additional space for people to walk between those vehicles before and after whatever event you host.

Other Uses for the Driveway

While most people will use their driveway to park their car, others will use it as a means to get their car into their garage. The question for you is, howwill you use your driveway?

Is it just a place for you to park your car, or will it be used for other things? If you have kids, will they be using it to ride their bikes or play games? Will the pavers be conducive to those activities?

If you entertain people at your home, is the driveway used for the party? Will these pavers look good for your home and be safe for you, your family, and your guests?

What Other Smaller Considerations Are There?

When choosing your driveway pavers, you want to take these and other considerations into account. This is also not going into the financial factor, which is also something to think about.

There’s also the question of whether or not you want to install your driveway pavers yourself or hire a team of professionals to install them for you.
